Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of year to get together with your parents and older relatives and create more great memories. It is also a time to have the “conversation”.
What is the conversation? The conversation is asking them how they want to be treated at the end of his or her life.. asking them if they have signed a health care directive so someone can make health care decisions for them if they are too sick to tell the doctor what they want. Some people will want the doctors to take all measures to keep them alive, some will say that they don’t want to be kept on life support. Everyone is different.
I have met with clients who were overwhelmed when faced with these questions because they never had the conversation and now mom or dad is seriously ill. It can be a tough conversation to start but is important because we want to make sure our loved ones are treated in the manner they want when seriously ill.
